First impressions count. Smart businesses know those impressions extend to their online presence as well.

Did you know it is really easy to add a bit of personality to your Twitter profile?

The right Twitter background tells people a lot about your company so it’s time to step it up and go custom. If you’re a beginner, you can start with the premade themes supplied by Twitter.

5 quick steps to customize your Twitter background with a premade theme:

1.    Log in to your Twitter account

2.    In the top navigation bar dropdown menu, click Settings

3.    Click the tab labeled Design

4.    Select a premade theme by clicking on it

5.    Click Save changes at the bottom of the page

Easy, isn’t it?

But I have to admit the choices available are pretty limited and who wants to be one of millions serving up exactly the same generic look?

On the same settings page, you can click through to Themeleon, a tool available from the ColourLovers community. There are nearly two million creative contributors sharing background patterns and colour palettes. And it's free!

Themelon requires read/write authority over your account but don't let this put you off as it opens up endless theme and colour palette possibilities that, once selected, are loaded into your account at the click of just one button.

On the left-hand side you can click through different themes to find something that fits with your business image.

After a bit of searching, this pin stripe pattern caught our eye as a nice match for INTHEBLACK as a business magazine, so we clicked on it to select it, which automatically previews the results in the bottom half of the screen:

The theme is right but pink, blue and purple colours? Not quite what we had in mind. Time for step two on the right-hand side – picking a colour palette. Start by looking for a colour palette that closely matches what you have in mind, then click once on the palette to select and display it. If the palette is close but not quite right, you can then click on any of the five individual colours to adjust them. Once you have the five shades you are looking for, just click the little arrow pointing left between the theme palettes and the colour palettes and your new colour choices are displayed on the preview pane.

That’s more like it.

The final step is to click on Save Profile - in the blue box directly above your profile preview. The app will ask permission to access your Twitter account and make the changes.

Hopefully this has sparked your enthusiasm for adding a bit of creativity to your Twitter profile. And it’s just the beginning. In part two we’ll take it to the next level together with a step by step guide to using your own tiled background and, my personal favourite, creating a business card style image that sits on the left-hand side of your profile.
